“Reflection: In Return to Koji Enokura” focuses on the influential contemporary artist Koji Enokura (1942–1995) and several of his oil painting students at Tokyo University of the Arts who were born in the 1960s. Enokura used his own body as a catalyst in his unending pursuit of “real” resonances between human consciousness and the outside world and the relationships of objects and their external spaces. His activities have been frequently described as “Mono-ha,” but cannot be confined to this context alone. His works remain a point of reference for many artists today.
As this autumn marks the 20th anniversary of Enokura’s death, Gallery 21 yo-j, along with Space 23℃ and Akiyama Gallery, present his works and the latest projects of seven of his female students. (Space 23℃ converted Enokura’s atelier into a gallery, while Gallery 21 yo-j and Akiyama Gallery had close ties with the artist.). This series is an opportunity to reconsider Enokura’s works as the source of other artists’ expressions.
