Ryusuke Ito presents an overview of his video installation series “Realistic Viturality” for the first time in Tokyo. Combining video and sculpture, the installation features large scale projection of images which bring to mind newsreels, documentary film, as well as scenes from SF movies, with a particular sense of power and presence, whilst as our eye turns to the sculptural elements of the work, we realize that it is in fact these scale models which appear before us on the screen in realtime. Here we may discern two realities and the gap between them as we encounter the misalignment and reframing which occurs between handmade set and projected image. As we encounter moving image on an intense scale on a daily basis, we easily come to loose our interest in their truth, and here “Realistic Virtuality” whilst the detailed contrivances of physical object and dynamic imagery bring us a sense of entertainment they also confront us with the hard questions of “what are we looking at?” and “what is truth?”
