Artists

Shunso Hishida, Taikan Yokoyama, Kanzan Shimomura, Buzan Kimura, Matazo Kayama, Matabe Iwasa et al.
Presenting 60 works of innovative Nihonga from the Fukui Fine Arts Museum, this selection of masterpieces focuses on the folding screen paintings of Japan Art Academy luminaries such as Taikan Yokoyama, Shunso Hishida, Kanzan Shimomura, and Buzan Kimura. Also introduced are works by artists who pursued new frontiers in postwar Nihonga, including Misao Yokoyama, his contemporary Matazo Kayama, and Makoto Mikami, whose works reference the new-wave Nihonga Panreal Art Group. A highlight of the show is a display of all 12 panels, including “Hokoji,” from “Narratives of Chinese and Japanese Historical Events” by Matabei Iwasa, an eccentric artist who spent roughly two decades in Fukui Prefecture.
*Some of the displayed works will be alternated during the exhibition period.
