Akira Shimaya “Fantastic Wings”

Chigasaki City Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Akira Shimaya
Akira Shimaya (1943–2010) worked in a variety of media, creating sculptures, wall paintings, and ceiling murals in addition to acrylic paintings, lithographs, and copperplate prints. Shimaya’s style was also diverse: birds (especially owls) appear in many works, sometimes blending with women’s faces and sometimes giving rise to what seem like strange and phantasmic worlds. Born and raised in Kanagawa Prefecture’s Katase, Fujisawa City, Shimaya spread his wings as an artist not just in Japan but around the globe, working in Holland, America, South America, and Suriname. Five years after his death, this exhibition introduces the multi-colored world of this artist from the Shonan region who soared around the globe.
