The Nerima Art Museum turns 30 this year. Its collection, which contained just one work when the doors opened, has grown to encompass some 6,700 pieces. To commemorate its 30th anniversary, the museum now presents the third exhibition in the four-part “Eras and Art” series, this time focusing on the 1970s and 1980s.
Japan’s rapid postwar economic growth stalled as oil crises hit the country in the 1970s, and the decade was marked by a gradual unraveling of people’s shared vision of progress. The 1980s saw the end of the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and other tumultuous global developments. What kinds of work did artists produce during these twenty years? Experience the art of this era with works by Kunio Makino and other artists.
