Artists on the Edges of Paris: Le Douanier Rousseau, Foujita, and Atget

Pola Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Claude Monet, Amedeo Clemente Modigliani, Raoul Dufy et al.
Transformations in aesthetic values occurring along with modernization in the second half of the 19th century also brought about new relationships with nature. Artists projected their ideals onto their portrayals of nature, with Gauguin depicting Tahiti as a untamed land and Renoir and Bonnard captivated with the fierce sunlight on the South of France’s Mediterranean coast. Monet painted changes in light, while Courbet took rustic nature as his subject. Works by these and other major artists from the Pola Museum of Art’s Western painting collection are on display in a show revealing the ideas behind these artists’ representations of towns and natural landscapes.
