Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hokusai Katsushika, Utamaro Kitagawa, Eisen Keisai
The Koishikawa Ukiyo-e Museum specializing in ukiyo-e wood-block prints was founded in 1998 by Hideo Matsui (1930–2013), a medical doctor and ukiyo-e researcher who hoped convey the true value of ukiyo-e to people inside and outside of Japan. Containing approximately 2400 prints, the Matsui Collection includes the works of popular artists such as Utamaro Kitagawa and Katsushika Hokusai, as well as pieces from the earliest days of the art form. Hence, the collection is known as one of Japan’s most outstanding ukiyo-e collections.

As the Koioshikawa Ukiyo-e Museum closed in March, 2014, this exhibition presents the last opportunity to view many of these excellent works. The show focuses on select pictures from the collection, while also touching upon the legacy of Dr. Matsui’s research, a great accomplishment in the study of ukiyo-e. The museum hopes visitors enjoy the charm and excellence of these ukiyo-e Dr. Matsui cherished.
