Zao Gongen and the Secret Treasures of Shugendo

Mitsui Memorial Museum
Finished
Shugendo is an esoteric sect unique to Japan that blends ancient Japanese mountain beliefs with Shintoism, Budhhism, Daoism, and Onmyodo (The Way of Yin and Yang). Its central tenant teaches that enlightenment is attained through strict religious practices performed in the mountains. Zao Gongen, the protective deity of Shugendo, appears as a ferocious blue-black figure with swept back hair, three eyes, and fangs bared in anger who stands on his left leg with his right raised in a high kick. At this landmark exhibition, behold the gods of the heavens and the world of Buddhism in paintings, mandalas, and other treasures from Nara Prefecture’s Kimpusen Temple and Mount Kimpu, where Shugendo originated, along with Zao Gongen statues from Tottori Prefecture’s Mitoku Sanbutsu Temple.
