In our contemporary times photography is recognized as an art expression but in the early days of photography in the 19th century this was not the case. In the late 19th century the movement of “pictorialism” came about, claiming photography as a 2D art form. When photography entered Japan in the mid 19th century there also came developments in pictorialism and art photography but this was given its own unique interpretation by Japanese creators. One of the pioneers in this movement was Teiko Shiotani (1899-1988). Since the 1920s he developed his own style of photography and came to draw upon the art photography of Yasuzo Nojima and Shinzo Fukuhara. In later life he came to gain much recognition with major exhibitions in Germany and the US laying a mark on the world of photography. This exhibition reviews his work between the 1920s and 1970s through a selection of 100 pieces.
