Kanako Nishi is known as a writer and recipient of the Naoki Award. This is the first exhibition to present Nishi’s artistic output in the field of visual art. Nishi has often drawn pictures for the front cover design of her books, these images all contributing to the fictional world she creates. For this exhibition Nishi has created a brand new mural installation covering the gallery walls. With this mural Nishi intended to create the visual equivalent of the final scene of her most recent novel, “i (Ai)”. Nishi, who has never received a formal art education, draws with pastel crayons on used cardboard picked up from local supermarkets. The layers of color she creates give bright and strong impressions, as if direct outbursts of energy from the creator’s body and spirit. One may relate her way of working with that of graffiti artists who freely express themselves with spray cans.
In the novel “i (Ai)”, the main protagonist is Ai, a Syrian girl adopted by a Japanese and American mixed race couple. She struggles to find her identity and spiritual liberty against the backdrop of the tragic events of 9.11, the Syrian Civil War and the Great East Japan Earthquake. Get a sense of the resolution of this novel by visiting this 360° gallery installation.
