The tradition of painting wall murals in public baths began around 100 years ago and is now considered a valuable part of Japan’s cultural heritage. One cannot help feeling a sense of the good old days of the Showa era when looking at one of the magnificent Mount Fuji murals that typically adorn the walls of public baths throughout Japan. This said, there are only two painters currently in Japan that have the unique skills needed to create these murals. One of them is the 81-year-old Kiyoto Maruyama, who paints these iconic pictures with unbelievable speed and accuracy. Maruyama’s Mount Fuji murals come in many forms and with numerous variations. In some, Mount Fuji stands in the depths of a calm and gentle lake, while in others the mountain is shaded red due to sunlight reflected by the clouds. For this exhibition the artist has created approximately 30 paintings that range in size. Enjoy this rare opportunity to view these iconic paintings outside of their typical setting.
