The mid-Edo period Ukiyo-e artist Katsukawa zShunso became popular for prints depicting actors, but in his late years concentrated on hand-painted nikihitsu bijin-ga paintings of beautiful women. Many of these works depicted women in everyday scenes using daily motifs in a refined and graceful atmosphere. Commemorating the 290th year of the birth of Katsukawa Shunsho, this show introduces the artist’s elegant world of female beauty featuring 31 nikihitsu Bijin-ga created through a process of layering mineral pigment paints and ink. Some of the works will be alternated during the exhibition period meticulously.
