Artists

Kuniyoshi Utagawa
In recent years, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861) has become one of the most celebrated ukiyo-e artists at the museum, with many exhibitions of his works organized so far. His charm is often described as “fantastic” and “humorous”. His first series to become a big success was the wild and cool warrior pictures of “One Hundred and Eight Heroes from Tales of the Water Margin”. This series pictorializes themes of the Chinese novel “Tales of the Water Margin”, well-known in Japan in Kuniyoshi’s time. He depicted exotic and powerful foreign heroes in this novel with dynamic brushstrokes. His challenging works of art gained popularity at lightning speed, giving rise to tattoos of them. This exhibition presents almost all pictures from this series, in addition to various pictures related to the themes of “Tales of the Water Margin”. Please enjoy the figures of brave heroes that Kuniyoshi threw his whole soul into.
