Cubism in Japan: Picasso’s Impact

Museum of Modern Art, Saitama
Finished

Artists

Pabro Picasso, Georges Braque, Seiji Togo, Tetsugoro Yorozu, Taro Okamoto, et al.
At the dawn of the 20th century, Picasso and others developed Cubism, which geometrically dismantled and reconfigured its subjects. This revolutionary style was enthusiastically adopted by artists in prewar Japan. After World War II, artists were impacted by Picasso’s works such as Guernica, and Cubist principles were again applied in a wide range of works of art. This exhibition explores the development of Cubism in Japan from the Taisho period (1912-1926) to the immediate postwar years.
