150 years of Western Fashion in Japan―Tradition from the Kimono to Western Clothing

Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum
Finished

Artists

Issei Miyake et al.
It has been 150 years since the people of Japan came to popularly dress in Western forms of fashion. When the black ships of Colonel Perry came into Yokohama port at the end of the Shogun era, the fleet of Westerners who came into the country displayed a whole new way of dressing. For over 1000 years the people of Japan had dressed in kimono but it is only a century and a half that they have dressed in Western clothing. This exhibition traces the history of such fashion in Japan from the Meiji period to contemporary fashion designers and examines the identities which are expressed here.
