Eisuke Wada: A Retrospective

Sano Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Eisaku Wada
The oil painter Eisuke Wada (1874–1959) left an enormous footprint on the history of modern Japanese painting. He created numerous masterpieces with skills of depiction bringing out the essential qualities and life forces of his subjects, combined with an acute sensitivity capturing changes in natural light and shadow. Mt. Fuji was one of his favorite motifs, and he continued to paint day-to-day shifts in the mountain’s scenery from when he moved to Shizuoka in 1951 until his death at age 84. This retrospective looking back on 70 years of practice by this artist and educator who helped lay the foundation for Japanese painting features 80 paintings from the height of Wada’s career through his late years.
