Iroe – Overglaze Enamel Porcelain

Japan Folk-Craft Museum
Finished
Iroe is a porcelain decorating technique involving painting in polychrome enamels on the surfaces of ceramics fired at high temperatures. The painted ceramics are then fired again in special kilns for overglaze enamels. The Japan Folk-Craft Museum holds several examples of iroe ceramics, such as Tianqi Akae made in China’s Jing-de-zhen folk kilns, Swatow wares created in Zhangzhou at the end of Ming dynasty, and Japanese Imari porcelain from Hizen, Kyushu. Besides these works, in this exhibition, iroe produced by Shoji Hamada are also on display, introducing the delightful world of this ceramic art.
