Yamanbagirikunihiro: Time to Conquer, Ashikaga

Ashikaga Museum of Art
Finished
Yamanbagirikunihiro is the name of a famous sword by swordsmith Kunihiro Horikawa. The sword was made following a request from Akinaga Nagao, Lord of Ashikaga in 1590, and its ambitious style and dignified appearance have led to it being considered one of Kunihiro’s representative works. This exhibition marks the first time this sword has been shown publicly in Ashikaga in 427 years. Kunihiro’s life is full of mystery, with rumors that he was a spy and theories that he relocated to Ashikaga Gakko after murdering people in Kyoto neither proven nor debunked to this day. This exhibition introduces famous swords alongside historical documents concerning the Ashikaga School.
