Artists

Yurie Sekiya
Yurie Sekiya loves “gyaru,” and this solo exhibition presents work on the theme of gyaru and mandalas. The word “gyaru” became popular as a term that referred to a Japanese street fashion subculture that emerged in the 90s, when women began dressing in different styles, often wearing striking hair styles and makeup. The term is now more broadly used, referring generally to fashionable girls. See how Sekiya navigates the term “gyaru” in her work.
