Perfume, which has been considered a luxury item of the privileged since ancient times, became available to the general public at the beginning of the twentieth century. In response to demand and competition from fellow producers, perfume makers began to create attractive packaging that would raise the appeal of their products. It was around this time that French jewelry designer René Lalique started to work on the production of glass perfume bottles at the request of fragrance trader, Coty. Lalique’s elegant perfume bottle, which stylishly embodied the invisible fragrances, quickly sparked a boom in the market. Continuing to work with glass, Lalique went on to became a great designer representative of the Art Deco style.
This exhibition will present a selection of glass perfume bottles, accessories and cosmetics containers by Lalique from Kitazawa Art Museum, which is famous for its world-class glass collection that includes top works by Émile Gallé among others. Alongside this, approximately 150 fashion items such as dresses and fashion plates from the time of the Art Deco movement will be presented in cooperation with Kobe Fashion Museum.
