Jimmy Tsutomu Mirikitani
Born in America in 1920, Jimmy Tsutomu Mirikitani grew up in his mother’s hometown of Hiroshima. He returned to America in 1938; during WWII he spent four years in a California internment camp as an “enemy alien.” After the war he worked in New York as a chef and painter of works that often featured cats and flowers. After the September 11th attacks of 2011, however, he observed hostile attitudes toward Arabs that recalled memories of a similar time 70 years before, and began creating paintings of his internment camp. He also painted Hiroshima’s A-Bomb Dome engulfed in flames, a work that stopped passersby in their tracks and sparked conversations about the atomic bombing. Mirikitani’s works contain messages for our contemporary society in which globalism creates a winner-take-all mentality and nationalism causes us to forsake others.
