Subjective Photography vol. 2: Kaoru Ohto

Artists

Kaoru Ohto
Born in 1927, Hiroshima-based photographer Kaoru Ohto is currently ninety years of age. She began taking photographs after the Second World War when scars carved into the landscape by the atomic bomb remained vivid. It was here that Ohto developed her practice of subjective photography and began producing various creative and experimental works. It may be shocking to some that a young person from Hiroshima, a part of the country that had just suffered unimaginable damage, could focus on such avant-garde photography. Though many of the negatives from this time have been lost, photographer Takada Toshiaki, a student of Ohto’s, has received approval from the photographer to create a set of new signed prints from the only remaining vintage prints, which were originally produced by Ohto. Approximately 30 works will be on exhibit here.
