Misuzu Kaneko + Shoko Kanazawa “Echoes between Calligraphy and Poetry”

Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi - 7th Floor New Galleries
Finished

Artists

Misuzu Kaneko, Shoko Kanazawa
Misuzu Kaneko was a poet who breathed life into the small things that surrounded her, and when she passed away at the age of 26 she left behind poems full of warmth. Her belief that “there is nothing useless in this world” captured the hearts of many fans. Shoko Kanazawa is a calligrapher who was born in 1985 and has Down Syndrome. She represented Japan with a speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York on World Down Syndrome Day in 2015 and held a solo exhibition at the Japan Club Japan Gallery there. Kanazawa came to know Kaneko’s work through the Complete Works published in 1985. Kanazawa identified with her poems as she herself grew, even though the forms their expression take are quite different and there are decades between them. This exhibition introduces Kaneko’s life and works alongside Kanazawa’s calligraphic masterpieces and works expressing phrases from Kaneko’s poetry.
