Until she passed away two years ago, photographer Nozomi Takada’s grandmother lived in Mito, in the southeastern part of Aomori Prefecture in the north of Honshu. Takada had visited her grandmother there since she was a child but after the death noticed that her relationship with the town became ambiguous. She knew that if she did not maintain a connection with this place in the future, the bond would weaken over time. It is common in Japan to see towns that once flourished now appear very quiet outside of traditional holidays such as New Year. Takada has said that though she is attracted to Mito, she doesn’t think she could live there. When she returns to Tokyo, however, she misses the air and nature of Mito. Realizing that the existence of this town is now part of her, Takada spends her time traveling between Tokyo and Mito with her camera.
