Terunobu Fujimori
Born in 1946, Terunobu Fujimori lived in Nagano Prefecture’s Chino City until he relocated to study at Tohoku University, later moving again to enter graduate school at the University of Tokyo. Established as a leading expert in modern architectural history and urban history, in 1991 at the age of 45 Fujimori made his architectural debut with the planning of Jinchokan Moriya Historical Museum in Chino. He has worked on more than 40 other projects over the last 25 years, including a house that sprouts dandelions and garlic from it’s roof, and a nest-like wooden tea house built into a tree. Fujimori’s work is recognized as being highly original, combining a freshness that exceeds the bounds of architecture with elements that embrace nostalgia for the distant past.

This exhibition explores the restoration of the relationship between architecture and nature, based around Fujimori’s two main preoccupations, which are how natural materials are utilized in contemporary architecture and the ways plants can be introduced into architecture. Architectural models for his key projects will be presented alongside photographs and sketches. Furniture and sample books for the materials used in the construction of roofs, walls, plaster and other elements of his architectural projects to date will also be on exhibit.
