Yoichi Ochiai, Digital Nature Group
Dr. Yoichi Ochiai explores the possibilities of expression between images and substances as a media artist. He organized “Digital Nature Group” at the University of Tsukuba, founded on “the theme of updating modern humanity” in this exploration. This exhibition aims to look back over the research and discoveries made, posing social questions from both technical and artistic points of view. The word “Technium,” which refers to both an ecological and a genetic view of technology, was originally proposed by Kevin Kelly, ex-chief editor of Wired magazine. It is the concept that technologies themselves have ecological views beyond the sorts that animals and computers have. The title of this exhibition, “Japanese Technium,” stands for the “Japanese Media Motif” that Dr. Ochiai has discovered in his exploration as a media artist. He believes that “Japanese Technium” has been generalized by our industrialized society, diluted by popularized media and subcultures, becoming a new nonverbal expression of aesthetic sense and embodiment of the Japanese point of view.

*On admission to the exhibition you will be requested to present ID and provide your name and telephone number. For details on what ID is accepted please see the official website. (These admission guidelines are subject to change).
