In recent years, Japanese avant-garde art has gained attention worldwide through exhibitions such as MoMA’s “1955–1970: A New Avant-Garde” and the “Gutai: Splendid Playground” show hosted at Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. This group exhibition at Fuma Contemporary Tokyo, Bunkyo Art will introduce remarkable contemporary art that has inherited the spirit of Gutai and builds on the foundations of Japanese avant-garde art prevalent from the 1950s through to the 1970s. The exhibiting artists include Nobuya Abe, Tatsuo Ikeda, Shigeo Ishii, Jiro Oyamada, Kuniyoshi Kaneko, On Kawara, Masao Tsuruoka, Hiroshi Nakamura, Kei Hiraga, Taizo Yoshinaka, + Izumi Kato, Yoshitoshi Kanemaki, Rieko Sakurai, Kei Saito, Yu Kawashima and others.
