In the 1960s a number of visual artists emerged from the scene around Fillmore, San Francisco’s legendary music venue. These artists were involved in promoting music events and creating artwork for record covers. Rick Griffin was one of them, known for the poster and record jacket artwork he created for musicians such as Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix. Since the latter half of the 1980s, silkscreen techniques have been popular on the west coast of the US in the production of posters. Often half of the posters produced are used by music artists for promotion, while the remaining half of the posters is sold by the artist who created them. Many bands, both indies and groups on major labels, produce posters in this mutually beneficial way. This exhibition will present silk-screened rock posters of the 1990s. In addition, the Machida-based silkscreen and giclée studio Zigame will also participate.
A silkscreen printing workshop will be held during the exhibition.
