European Mode

Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum
Finished
This exhibition will introduce the transition of women’s fashion originating in Europe over the last 250 years, set against a backdrop of social developments. It will begin with 18th century Rococo, where the French court originated a shift in fashion, moving into the 19th century, which was characterized by industrial development and the maturation of society, ending up in the 20th century, where it was young people and the public that became key players in fashion. Attention is paid to the changing role of the “black dress;” since the late 19th century there has been a shift in meaning that has resulted in black dresses being considered as fashionable apparel as well as mourning garments. Follow the genesis of the “little black dress” from the late 19th century to the late 20th century and see how designers have expressed unique personality in this color.
