Artists

Tatsuo Kawaguchi
Tatsuo Kawaguchi’s work “Relationship - Quality,” incorporating pieces of metal and nails into handmade Japanese paper, demonstrates the artist’s experimental approach to expanding the possibilities of printmaking. This piece, which received the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art Award at the 11th Tokyo International Print Biennale in 1979, will be exhibited here alongside other works such as “Relation - Trace,” comprised of cotton cloth permeated with naturally occurring iron rust and copper patina. Works in book form will also be presented. “Sun Flower” is a work by Kawaguchi that features copies of sunflower seeds that made it a booklet.

After graduating from Tama Art University in Tokyo, Kawaguchi (b. 1940) returned to Kobe, where he was born. In 1965, he formed a group known as “(I),” comprised of young artists residing in Kobe, and in 1968 participated the exhibition “Tricks and Vision,” organized by art critics Yusuke Nakahara and Junzo Ishiko. He drew much interest exhibiting at “Between Man and Matter - The 10th International Art Exhibition of Japan (Tokyo Biennale 1970),” alongside other leading contemporary artists from around the world. His work has consistently addressed the relationship between the visible and the invisible, by using various materials, such as paper, fabric, iron and seeds, as well as diverse approaches.
