Osamu Matsuda
Osamu Matsuda views societal issues from the standpoint of his atypical background, also bringing this unique point of view into his art practice. He employs various different methods and ways of expressing his ideas, sometimes creating a counter to current societal trends, or portraying his conflicted love affair with art. However, all of his output is driven by the same question about the nature and universality of humankind.

On this occasion, Matsuda has brought his focus to “those people or things that exist, but are not yet categorized and are not easily searched on the Internet.” Until now, he has created work based on serial killers and hermits, in other words, minorities and those who live alone in the shadows. Reflecting back on his creation process, Matsuda has started to question whether maybe he is the one who is violently categorizing them, actively searching out these particular “groups” of people for his art. Maybe the whole society has been heavily influenced by “words,” “ideologies,” or “impressions” that are based on such assumptions and fixed templates. In thinking along these lines, the purpose of this exhibition came to be about “those still unnamed” as an attempt to escape from “prejudice” or “set beliefs.”

Works presented include a video piece titled “Goodbye Ideologists,” where Matsuda plays the role of different “ideologists” in an attempt to bring a cynical view to “stereotypical ideologists,” and another video piece titled “【Evil】Nobody knows【Passions】,” showing 108 desires as told by a female office workers Matsuda randomly encountered. All these works humorously portray Matsuda’s desperate attempt to liberate himself from the “categorized” and “fixed” society.
