Kiyoyuki Kato takes a very simple approach to ceramics, sensing the texture characteristic of the particular clay he is working with and developing his forms from there. This said, his works are carefully shaped with a powerful yet delicate touch that is embodied by each object. Engraved intuitively using knives and wooden instruments, his patterns compliment the form of each work to create a highly sculptural final piece. As part of his practice, Kato also works with kaolin clay, and has produced a whole series by embracing the unique texture of this very versatile and fine clay. Since kaolin clay has translucent properties, the patterns engraved on the surface of the work result in shade that creates impressive contrast with the glowing whiteness of the form, which increases in brightness depending on the properties of the light. This delicate expression of beauty is something that can only be achieved using kaolin, where ceramic mark making techniques are applied. This exhibition will introduce around 100 works by Kato, including masterpieces from his kaolin series, Oribe dishes, vases and ash glaze tea bowls.
