As Western-style painting reached Japan in the Edo period, people were startled by the differences between its emphasis on scientific Realism and the styles of traditional Japanese art. Yuichi Takahashi pursued expressions of Western Realism in lithographs conveying the freshness of nature and the external world through precise representation. In the Taisho era of the early 20th century, painter Ryusei Kishida sought the “classic beauty” of Northern Renaissance masters with outstanding skills of realistic depiction.
Although their approaches differed, both Takahashi and Kishida believed it necessary to realistically reproduce the world in the smallest detail in order to convey true feeling. This exhibition of works by Takahashi, Kishida, and others explores the evolution of Realist art in Japan over 150 years from the Meiji period through the present, getting to the heart of Japan’s original take on Realism.
