Takeshi Motai, Yoshitomo Nara
“Residing in day-to-day life, Takeshi Motai’s aesthetic sense is paradoxically sublime. His artwork makes no distinctions between East and West; it is pure spirit.” So says popular contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara, who is behind the organization of this exhibition. Nara was born three years after the death of Motai, who created many picture books in the years following the war but missed out on experiencing the popularity of the picture book genre during his lifetime. Nevertheless, Motai is a figure who has influenced many of the artists who came after him. This is an opportunity to enjoy viewing works that transcend time and have touched artists such as Nara. The exhibition includes Motai’s sketchbooks from his journeys in Paris, “The Debris of Paris,” and his illustrated tale “The Picture Book of Dreams.”
