Having received the Hokkaido Culture Award in 2011, Toshiya Shimozawa is considered a ceramic artist representative of Hokkaido. He is active not only in Japan, but also Korea, China and New York. In his work, Shimozawa explores the memory of life amidst the flow of time in the majestic nature of the north of Japan. His sculptural masterpiece “Re-birth” uses unrefined red clay from Hokkaido to explore themes such as weathering and the reproduction of life, showing what can be reborn from decay. Shimozawa also produces items such as bowls and ceramic wares, fascinated by the freedom and shape of Oribe Ware. A variety of pots, bowls and other items will be presented here.
