The Sophisticated Women and Men of Edo as Seen in their Kimonos and Accessories

Tobacco & Salt Museum
Finished
Today there are fewer and fewer opportunities for people to wear traditional Japanese kimono and jewelry. During the Edo period (1603–1868) and Taisho era (1912-1926), however, people living in cities such as Edo, Kyoto and Osaka wore kimono and jewelry on a daily basis, and there was much individualization of items and innovation behind what was produced at that time. Looking back at these objects now, the various designs, materials and techniques continue to appear fresh.
This exhibition focuses on Edo and Taisho textiles and bags from the collection of Kiyoshi Nakamura, founder of the Tokyo-based bag dealership of the same name. Nakamura focused on collecting embroidered pieces, well-tailored items and high-quality dyed commodities in the early Showa period (1926-1989), at a time when traditional Japanese clothing was being outmoded by western-style garments. This exhibition will focus on men’s and women’s kimono as well as small bags (hakosako) and tobacco pouches that were worn together with them. There will be around 200 items on exhibit, including hair styling templates and cosmetic tools.
