Joni Waka, universally known as “Johnnie Walker,” director of the art foundation A.R.T., created the juried Bacon Prize to honor and support a specially selected artist of any nationality that has presented their work in Japan. It is named after Francis Bacon, the Irish-born artist and in memory of Tokyo’s art world mascot, a Budapest born vegetarian Irish Wolfhound a.k.a. “Bacon.”
The annual Tokyo Prize, which is given to an individual for “their extraordinary support of the Japanese contemporary arts” was awarded last year to architect Shigeru Ban, will also be presented.
This ceremony at the United Nations University will coincide with Yokohama Triennale 2017, which runs from August 4 to November 5.
You can enjoy an evening of champagne that features a special performance by N.O.B a.k.a. COCOSPIN featuring human beat boxer AFRA, as well as other artists. There will also be the Annual art car exhibition produced by the A.R.T. foundation sponsored by Mercedes Benz, Japan, as well as a scent-led performance by Air Aroma Japan and much more.
