The eternal masterpiece “The Rose of Versailles” stands out as one of the best-known titles in the shojo (girls) manga genre . This year, to commemorate its creator Riyoko Ikeda’s fifty year manga career, this exhibition will introduce half a century of her diverse and incredible work. When Ikeda debuted in 1967, she aimed for independence at the time when the social advancement of women was still strictly monitored. Running from 1972 to 1973, “The Rose of Versailles,” which depicted the fate of Queen Marie Antoinette and Oscar François de Jarjayes, a girl raised as a young man so that she may become her father’s successor, was a massive hit. This work is regularly performed by the all-female Takarazuka Revue theater troupe and continues to be read by generations young and old to this day.
Presenting more than 200 original works and materials, many of these being exhibited publicly for the first time, this exhibition traces the trajectory of Ikeda’s brilliant career from her formative years to the present day.
