Museum of Modern Art, Hayama
Finished

Artists

Tamizyurou Kume, Masanori Murai, Takeo Yamaguchi, Hisao Doumoto, Kumi Sugai, Simpei Sakakura et al.
The dynamic development of Abstract painting throughout the twentieth century occurred more or less concurrently in Japan, too. It was in 1918 that Tamijuro Kume produced “Off England” in Britain. In the 1920s, Tomoyoshi Murayama, who had been studying in Berlin, presented innovative works. In the 1930s, Masanari Murai and Ken Hirohata realized new expressions of their own. After World War II, Ghiju (Yoshishige) Saito attempted conceptual abstraction in “Demon.” In France, Toshimitsu Imai, Hisao Domoto, and others involved in Art Informel created monumental works. The museum collection introduces 22 examples of Japanese Abstraction, which continues to evolve diversely even today.
