Ryusei Furukawa Exhibition

Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts
Finished

Artists

Ryusei Furukawa
The Tochigi-born artist Ryusei Furukawa (1893–1968) was a self-taught printmaker from his teens. He worked as a teacher after graduating from Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts) and produced works for prestigious groups including the Japan Print Association and the Shunyo-Kai. Illness and war interrupted his creative activities, but he continued to create etchings until the very last years of his life. His woodblock prints, estimated to number around 400, present richly poetic worlds of chic lines and delicate colors. This retrospective exhibits a selection 70 outstanding woodblock prints by Furukawa from the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts collection, along with his painting and poetry collections, sketches, studies, and more.
