Yoshitoshi – A Genius Ukiyo-e Master in a Turbulent Time

Nerima Art Museum

Artists

Yoshitoshi Tsukioka
Ukiyo-e artist Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839–1892) was born in the Edo era of samurai. While his work centered on bushido-e warrior pictures, he also learned bijinga and giga prints featuring beautiful women and caricatures from Kuniyoshi Utagawa. During the Meiji Restoration, his art showed a change toward more realistic scenes of battle. He continued to pursue the artistic potential of bushido-e through the late years of his career, earning the title “the last Ukiyo-e artist.” Nerima Art Museum presents 263 Yoshitoshi works owned by collector Masaki Nishii – the world’s largest and highest-quality Yoshitoshi collection. This is the first extensive retrospective for the artist in 15 years.
