Kashima Arts
Finished

Artists

Takamori Saigo, Kaisyu Katsu, Deisyu Takahashi, Tessyu Yamaoka
Exhibiting calligraphy by important historical figures from the end of the Edo period (1603–1868): Samurai Saigo Takamori and the Bakumatsu Sanshu “Three Ships” collective, made up of Katsu Kaishu, Takahashi Deishu, Yamaoka Tesshu. These four played pivotal roles in determining the course of Japan at the dawn of the Meiji Restoration. These calligraphic writings on rare display with the support of The Bakumatsu Calligraphy Appraisal Committee offer insight on each of their artists’ unique styles and philosophies. It is hoped their words might offer guidance as Japan once again faces the end and the beginning of an era with the Heisei period coming to a close.
