Children in Ukiyo-e and the Modernization of Japan

Ashikaga Museum of Art
Finished
The children depicted in ukiyo-e woodblock prints tell us much about the atmosphere of the times. The ukiyo-e of the Meiji period depicts children living their lives to the fullest during a time of much social change and upheaval. School education was introduced to Japan during this time and children in Western-style clothing learning English can be seen in the prints of the time. Through these depictions, we can see Japanese society striving for an ideal. At the same time, in the back streets, the atmosphere of the Edo-period still lingers. From mid-Meiji, nostalgia for the Edo period emerges and this can be seen in kimono-clad children playing traditional Edo period games. This exhibition showcases over 300 ukiyo-e works and documents depicting children at play and studying during a period of transition from Edo to modernity.
