Kou-u Aimi, Ichimatsu Tanaka, Tsugiyoshi Doi
Surveying and documenting artworks has long been the starting point for art history research. In Japan, art history blossomed and flourished in the Taisho and Showa eras with diverse and numerous surveys by Kou-u Aimi (1874–1970), Ichimatsu Tanaka (1895–1983), and Tsugiyoshi Doi (1906–1991). Considering the difficulties in art archiving during this time – photography and copying were not simple, changes in social conditions caused many collections to be split up or lost, important works were destroyed in wars and natural calamities – the dedication of these three art historians each with a unique approach is clear. This exhibition reconsiders their contributions as recorded in their notes while looking back on developments in Japanese art history as a field.
