Hijikata Tatsumi as Trickster / “Rebellion of the Body” 1968—2018

Keio University Art Center
Finished

Artists

Tatsumi Hijikata
Tatsumi Hijikata insisted that he himself was his work. Can we still regard him as a cultural hero today? In 2008, Keio University Art Center organized the exhibition “1968” and introduced materials concerning the Butoh dance of Tatsumi Hijikata, exploring how it came to be called “Rebellion of the Body” while considering the significance this show had. Presenting “Rebellion of the Body” from 1968, the current exhibition intends to review Hijikata’s activity in the two years after, when he aimed for revolution in dance methodology.

The exhibition also introduces Choy Ka Fai’s “UnBearableDarkness” and Amareya Theatre’s “Deadman Eating Watermelon” in both installations and demonstrations. As is usual with exhibitions about Hijikata, this one reconsiders who Hijikata was as well as what his Butoh was.
