Japan Design Committee is holding its 747th Design Gallery 1953 exhibition, “Image Observatory” by Tomohiro Okazaki. Okazaki’s work does not fit within the usual constraints. When creating an image, he deconstructs and rearranges the subject in search of its essence. His unique approach has led to surprising results. The most accessible example may be his work on the “Break up!” segment on NHK’s “Design ‘A’” television program, where an everyday object is broken into pieces and the process of observing the individual pieces is captured on stop motion video. This exhibition is an examination into “words”, “shapes”, and “placement”. A so-called “Image Observatory” is being created through the examination of everyday objects such as a banana, gloves, and so on.
