Opened in 1964, Yokohama Civic Art Gallery has a long history of holding exhibitions introducing Japanese contemporary art and furthering exchange with overseas sister cities. Though these exhibitions it has amassed a collection of some 1,300 works, which it displays in annual collection shows. This time the gallery presents around 100 postwar works featuring Yokohama in 1950s through 1970s, including photography by Hisashi Igashira (b. 1931), Yasuhiro Okumura (1914–1995), Toyoko Joban (b. 1930), and Takashi Hamaguchi (b. 1931); drawings from the 1979 Yokohama Landscapes Exhibition commemorating the 120th anniversary of Yokohama’s port opening; and photographs from the 1988 show “Yokohama Museum of Art/Yokohama Landscapes” held together with sister city Shanghai. See how Yokohama’s landscape has evolved in these works each depicting the city with a unique perspective and framing approach.
