“Minami Gallery and Kusuo Shimizu” Exhibition and Talk Event

Keio University Art Center
Finished

Artists

Kusuo Shimizu et al.
Starting in 1956 with the solo exhibition of Tetsuro Komai, the Minami Gallery held over 250 exhibitions until its untimely closure due to the sudden passing of gallery owner Kusuo Shimizu. The gallery could be said to have played an important role in the 1960-1970 art scene. 1959’s Jean Fautrier exhibition was followed by a series of exhibitions by overseas artists such as Sam Francis and Jasper Johns and helped to spread their names in the country. Many modern Japanese artists also exhibited at the gallery. The gallery was a gathering place not only for artists but also for critics, poets, architects, and others.
