The sailor uniform is a symbol of Japanese female high school students. Based on the 19th century British Navy uniform, the sailor uniform eventually became a popular fashion item for children and women. How did the unisex sailor uniform come to become beloved over the past 100 years as the uniform of female high school students? This exhibit tackles this question by showcasing illustrations and texts from magazines and comic books. Also on exhibit will be works by illustrator Junichi Nakahara, who was the inspiration for Naoko Takeuchi’s ‘Sailor Moon’ and Yusuke Nakamura, who created the poster for this exhibition.
