Founded in 1819 with the Royal Spanish Collection at its core, the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid is one of the world’s most celebrated temples of art. This exhibition, held with the Museo del Prado’s full cooperation, features 70 pieces from its collection. They include 61 masterpieces mostly of the 17th century, displayed around a nucleus of seven pieces by Diego Velázquez (1599-1660), one of the greatest painters of all time.
17th-century Spain produced a succession of great artists, from Velázquez to Ribera, Zurbarán, and Murillo. The enormous passion of Spanish monarchs for paintings and collecting artworks can be cited as an important factor fostering the art of such painters. Velázquez, a court painter who rose to greatness under Philip IV’s patronage, drew creative stimulus from masterpieces by Titian and Rubens in the Royal Collection. As an artist, he embodied the honor that Spain conferred on the art of painting. This exhibition recreates the international art scene of 17th-century Spain with a focus on Philip IV’s court, offering in this way an immersion in the splendor of the Museo del Prado’s extensive collection.
